All that Glisters

Santa's Secret Village | Gabriel's Wharf | South Bank

Letters are all around us - they are in books, magazines and on screens, on buildings, advertising hoardings and signage, they show us the names of streets and roads, and point us in the right direction on motorways. Combined into words, they give us information, messages, and ideas.

Calligraphy uses letters and words to create beautiful and visually pleasing artworks which can lift the soul and gladden the eye. The Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society is the largest and most supportive calligraphy society in the world, and All that Glisters is the fourth in their prestigious Living Letters series of exhibitions.

The artworks selected from Honoured Fellows, Fellows and members of the society embrace a very wide spectrum of approaches and ideas. Letters are cut into stone and wood and gilded, or cast in brass, embossed on to card, or written and painted on to fabric, paper, vellum and wood. However, the exhibition title also allowed great room for scope of approach and technique, and words related to gold and sunshine appear in many of the texts used. The glistening shiny metal reflects brilliantly in the special river light of the gallery.

Those whose idea of calligraphy is constrained to biblical texts in black letters on white paper will have their eyes opened by the contemporary artworks here which delight and challenge.
